International Summer School and Competition


The organization committee will prescreen all applications and preselect the participants for the event. After the preselection process you will be informed via E-Mail and asked to transfer the registration fee to complete the registration. We will offer two types of applications:

Individual (100 CHF)
Individual registered participants will be assigned to a team for the competition

Research group (300 CHF)
3-5 researchers from one lab who will participate in the competitions as a team

Selected Students will receive a Free Registration Award, covering the registration cost for the Summer School.

Event Description

We are excited to announce the second edition of the Medical Augmented Reality Summer School, again bringing together the world's experts in Medical AR, clinicians, companies and talented academic researchers from all around the world, foster cooperation, and hopefully push the boundaries of Medical Augmented Reality.

The summer school will be held as an online event, organized by a consortium of scientists and clinicians from Balgrist University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland, Technical University, Munich, Germany, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, and University of Zurich, Switzerland, which are among the leading centers for cutting-edge research in Medical Augmented Reality. The event will start with daily three hour sessions, streamed from August 30th to September 10th 2021, from 4 PM - 7:30 PM CEST, including exciting keynotes of renowned speakers from research, hospital, and industry, as well as panel discussions and live surgery. We chose these hours to allow researchers from across the world to be able to join it online (from 7am in California to 11pm in Japan). The participants will develop a project idea together with respective mentors in group breakout sessions and pitch their final concept at the end of the two-week workshop.

The end of the workshop marks the kick-off of the competition, which are held in cooperation with industry partners. An independent committee will select the winners in an award ceremony in early 2022 (the exact date will be announced soon) which will receive awards in finencial form. The competition will consist of two dedicated tracks with the topics:

  1. AR for Computer Aided Interventions in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery
  2. Surgical Education and Training
